Somali parliamentarians discussed a power sharing motion today.
Sheikh Jama Haji Hussein, an MP from the fifth clan, had criticised cabinet members for violating power sharing rights of the fifth clan formerly knows as the others . Sheikh Jama’s ire is directed at the absence of fifth clan members in ambassadors and director generals who were appointed recently. Ahmed Ali Jama Jangali, Minister of Livestock and Animal Husbandry, has defended cabinet members and argued that appointment of ambassadors and director generals is inline with power sharing arrangement in place.
Radio station managers in Mogadishu have agreed to discontinue the transmission of programmes for 24 hours in a protest at Banadir regional management’s closure of Shebelle, Banadir and Sibma radio stations last week. Among radio stations that will not be on air in the coming twenty four hours are Somaliweyn, HornAfrik, IQK and Hamar.
Two government soldiers were shot dead in Bakara market today while on duty. Two young men armed with handguns had targeted the soldiers. One of them died on the spot; the other was rushed to a hospital where he died. Bakara market traders are worried that today’s incident may lead to more restrictions and counter-insurgency measures.
Hawiye Unity Council Chairman Mohamed Hassan Haad said that he had left Mogadishu for fear of his life. He said he is in a suburb outside Mogadishu. “ I left the city because of government intimidation. I will return to Mogadishu if the situation improves,” he said. Mr Haad said that he was worried about the health of Mr Ahmed Diriiye, spokesman for the Hawiye Unity Council, whom authorities in Mogadishu detained few weeks ago for alleged incitement.
